You can host Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving in an apartment. The key is to plan ahead. Move the gathering outdoors if you have shared space, start thawing the turkey several days early, and keep the stovetop and your pets in mind. At Four Thousand Horizon Hill, residents can use outdoor kitchens with pergolas, private patios and balconies, and on-site laundry, so hosting in a one- or two-bedroom home is easier than you might think.
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year. Here’s how to make it work.
Can you host Thanksgiving in a one-bedroom apartment?
Yes. You’ll want more seating, not more square footage. Set up a buffet on your kitchen counter so you free up table space. Use your private patio or balcony as a drinks station or a dessert bar. If your guest list is bigger than your living room, take the meal to one of our outdoor kitchens with pergolas. San Antonio’s mild November weather makes eating outside one of the best parts of the season. Check with the leasing office about any guidelines for using the shared spaces.
Are you comparing layouts before you sign a lease? Our post on choosing between a 1 and 2 bedroom apartment explains how much room each layout gives you. You can also see every option on our floor plans page. Select homes include a fireplace, which makes an easy, cozy backdrop for a post-dinner hangout.
When should you start thawing your turkey?
Start sooner than you think. The USDA estimates a full day of refrigerator thawing for every four to five pounds of turkey, so a 15-pound bird needs about three days. Once fully thawed, it can stay in the fridge another day or two before cooking. For a Thursday dinner, take a 16-pound turkey out of the freezer by Sunday, November 22. If you run out of time, the USDA’s cold-water method takes roughly 30 minutes per pound, but you need to change the water every half hour and cook the turkey right away. Find the full guidance at the USDA.
Apartment tip: Apartment fridges fill up fast. Clear a shelf a week ahead, and put the turkey in a pan so juices don’t drip.
How do you keep your apartment kitchen safe on Thanksgiving?
Stay in the kitchen while you cook. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the top day of the year for U.S. home cooking fires, and unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor. In a shared building, safety matters for your neighbors too. Keep a lid nearby for stovetop flare-ups. Keep towels and paper away from burners. Don’t fry a turkey on your patio or balcony. The NFPA discourages turkey fryers and suggests buying a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant instead.
How do you keep pets safe during Friendsgiving?
Keep the feast on the table and off the floor. The American Veterinary Medical Association warns that turkey and turkey skin, even in small amounts, can trigger pancreatitis in pets. Poultry bones can also damage the digestive tract. If your dog or cat gets overwhelmed by visitors, the AVMA suggests setting them up in another room or a crate with a favorite toy. Bag up the turkey carcass and take it straight to the trash. Save the ASPCA Poison Control number in your phone too: (888) 426-4435. AVMA Provides Tips on Keeping Pets Safe This Thanksgiving +2
